About Ragdolls

Ragdolls are a large, semi-longhaired breed.  They are known for their sweet natures.  They are a "pointed" cat, which means they have blues eyes AND ears and tail darker than the body.  They are laid-back and require only moderate grooming.

Is a Ragdoll Right for You?

Kittens are sold to approved homes only.    When you inquire about a kitten, I will ask about your family members, home, pets, and will ask how much time you have at home to devote to your kitten.  Ragdolls make wonderful family pets!   When it comes to young children, consider that very young kids should not be left unattended with a kitten or cat.  If your children are old enough to learn not to chase a cat and to handle it respectfully and gently, a ragdoll may fit into your household.  No ragdoll should be subjected to rough
handling.

Please note that if you are allergic to cats, you will be allergic to ragdolls.

The Purrla Story

Purrla was established in 2000 by myself, Elaine Poy Smith.  After showing my first ragdoll, Giorgio, I decided to breed my own show cats.  I currently breed and show ragdolls of all patterns (colorpoint, mitted, and bicolor) in both blue and seal.   I also specialize in ragdolls of traditional pedigrees.  Most of my breeding cats were previously show cats.  My kittens are sired by grand champions and are from top quality contemporary bloodlines.  I breed to the standard, not just to produce kittens.  We have produced three regional winners so far and hope for many more to come.  Some of our kittens are now successful foundation cats for other catteries.  I am also on the CFA Ragdoll Breed Council.

How We Keep Our Cats & Raise Our Kittens (Your Future Family Member)

My breeding and kitten-rearing practices are based on the following objectives:

All foundation cats have been HCM DNA tested for the 2 known HCM mutations.  This is done to identify "carriers."  AT THIS TIME ALL OUR BREEDERS ARE NEGATIVE FOR THESE MUTATIONS.

To minimize disease exposure, Purrla is a closed cattery.  I do not provide stud service and my cats are kept indoors.  In addition to these measures, I test all new additions to my household for FIV and FeLV.

My cats are kept in sanitary, spacious home and cattery areas.  Kittens are well-socialized.

It has always been my goal to maintain a very small, in-home cattery while continually improving the quality of my cats and giving all my breeding cats their well-deserved lives as beloved house pets.  As a result, I retire and place a few breeding cats per year.  These cats are usually young adults 2-4 years of age and are almost always show quality.  Look for these special adult cats on my available page from time to time.

Purrla is located in New Mexico.
